Campfire Day
Gemma Everson and her girls will be thinking about snuggling together by a warm campfire today.
Hello, my name is Gemma Everson and I am a children’s author, a teacher and also a mum.
Today is a fun packed day of activities about campfires. We will be getting outside to collect sticks and fiery leaves to make our own campfire. We will also be drawing using real charcoal!
Ordering Sticks
We are getting outside this morning to find sticks. Lots of sticks! All different shapes and sizes. Then we will be ordering them, finding the biggest and the smallest, the thickest and the thinnest. We will use them later for our campfire!
Talk about the similarities and differences between the sticks. Help your child to compare them and order them according to size and shape and encourage the correct vocabulary related to measure.
Fiery Leaves
At this time of year, the leaves are beautiful shades of red, gold, yellow, orange and brown. See how many different fiery colours you can find using the colour chart on the activity sheet. You will need them later!

Charcoal Drawing
Did you know that charcoal is burnt wood? Using charcoal, or wood your grown up has burnt themselves, explore drawing lines and patterns. Try smudging it with your fingers – it can get very messy!
This activity will help your child to explore different drawing mediums. It is excellent for fine motor skills and mark making.
Make Your Own Campfire
Arrange your sticks and fiery leaves into a campfire and gather round with your grown up. Pretend you are camping under the stars and toasting marshmallows. You might even like to sing some campfire songs like ‘Kumbaya’.
This activity will help your child to use their imagination through role play. Play an active part in the game to help to keep them engaged. You could talk about keeping safe around fires during the game.
