Christmas Card Day

Hello, my name is Gemma Everson and I am a children’s author, a teacher and also a mum.

Today is Christmas card day and we will be making cards, writing messages and sending them to our family and friends. Join us soon for activity one.

Exploring Christmas Cards

For our first activities, we will look at a range of different cards. What size will your card be? What picture would you like on your card?

Grown Ups:
Talk about images associated with Christmas and help your child to select an image for their card. Talk about how they might create it e.g. would they like to use paint? collage?

Make a Christmas Card

For this activity you will need some coloured card, some paint and brushes and cotton wool. Use your hand to print Father Christmas’ face and then add cotton wool for the bobble on his hat!

Grown Ups:
Talk about images associated with Christmas and help your child to select an image for their card. Talk about how they might create it e.g. would they like to use paint? collage?

Writing a Christmas Message

Now it is time to decide who you are sending your card to. Think about what message you could write inside. Practice writing your name and perhaps a Christmas greeting with your grown ups help.

Grown Ups:
Help your child to decide on a greeting. Then depending on your child’s level, help them to sound out the words using their phonics or write the message for them to trace over. Your child could just sign their name at the end.

Posting your Christmas Card

Our card is written so now we need to pop it in an envelope and address it to our recipient. Gemma is posting her card to her Mum and Dad so she is putting a stamp on it and putting it into the envelope.

Grown Ups:
For this activity talk about first names and surnames and explain how letters are delivered once they are put into the post box.

Extension

If you would like to do a little bit more, perhaps you might like to write a letter to Father Christmas telling him what you would like for Christmas this year.
