Winter Solstice Day

Hello, my name is Emma and I am a teacher and an artist. Today our activities will be based on the Winter Solstice; the shortest day of the year. All the activities are very creative, for you to join in with today. We will be making a frosty wax crayon painting, a snowflake craft, a snowy tree picture and a winter lantern.

Frosty Wax Crayon Picture

In our first activity we will be painting a picture of a moon and stars.

Grown Ups:
Once your child has drawn their wax crayon images onto the paper, share with them how to cover with thinned down blue paint. Once it starts to dry, you’ll see all the wax images on your picture.

This gives children an opportunity to explore with different tools and textures. It also supports children’s creativity.

Snowflake Picture

In this activity we will be using tissue paper and our snowflake template to make a winter scene.

Grown Ups:
Once your child has drawn their wax crayon images onto the paper, share with them how to cover with thinned down blue paint. Once it starts to dry, you’ll see all the wax images on your picture.

This gives children an opportunity to explore with different tools and textures. It also supports children’s creativity.

Snowy Fingerprint Tree

In this activity we will be making a snowy tree using our fingers to paint.

Grown Ups:
You will need some coloured or black paper and white paint. Cut out a tree shape and have fun making some snowy splodges onto the background to look just like snow. You can use sponges and other things you may find around the house too. This develops children’s creativity and expressive arts and design. It also supports their language and communication linked to winter time.

Winter Laterns

For our last activity of the day we are going to make a winter lantern.

Grown Ups:
On the shortest day of the year we will need more light. Work together with your child to make a beautiful glass lantern with a beaded handle.

This supports children’s knowledge and understanding of the season of winter time. It also develops their creativity.
