World Environment Day
Hello children I'm Jude, an author and storyteller. Here are my storytelling mascots Lamby and Flossie. Today is World Environment Day and we're going to be thinking about how we can care for our local environment and encourage some of the insects we need for our eco-system.
Our Local Environment
The theme for this year's World Environment Day is Eco-systems. Eco-systems are really important for keeping the planet healthy. What can we do to look after the eco-system nearest to us?
Discuss your local environment (your outdoor space or local green space) and how you can care for it. What can we do to encourage our eco-system to be healthy?
Use language such as environment, eco-system, insects, flowers, plants, planet, earth, care. Develops - Communication and Language, Understanding the World skills and PSED
You could try -
1. Discuss your outdoor space and how you can care for it.
2. Discuss your outdoor space, how you can care for it and how you can encourage more insects to come.
3. Discuss your outdoor space, how to encourage wildlife and how you can keep it tidy. You could make a poster.
Counting Flowers
Flowers are really important for our eco-system. You can count how many flowers are in your outdoor space or a green space near to your setting. We'll be using a counting system called a tally chart and I'll show you how to make one.

Make a Buzz Bee
Bees are really important for our eco-system. We need to encourage more of them with flowers and plants that they like. We're going to make our very own Buzz Bee out of paper shapes.
Help your child to draw and cut out a head, body, wings, legs, stripes and antennae. Talk about the shapes you have used and count how many body parts there are in total.
Use vocabulary such as body part names, draw, cut, count.
Develops - Understanding the World, Physical, Maths and Communication and Language skills.
Why not try -
1. Drawing around household objects to make the shapes for Buzz Bee with help.
2. Drawing around household objects to make the shapes for Buzz Bee.
3. Drawing their own version of the body parts for Buzz Bee.
Buzz Bee Game
Now we can play a fun game with our Buzz Bee.
You will need a dice.
Encourage your child to roll the dice, count the spots and match body parts to the number. You can make up your own rules about whether you need a certain number to start with. You can make more Buzz Bees so the whole family can join in. Use language such as - dice, roll, count, spots, number, body parts.
Develops - Maths, Communication & Language, and Understanding the World skills.
Why not try changing the rules to make it easier or harder for your child.
That's Our Home!
Snuggle up for this tale about caring for our beaches.
