Bird is the Word Day

Come and fly on an adventure to Liverpool to join the mythical Liver Birds and some other friends on a day to flap your wings.

Join artist and writer Ali with his ‘Liverpool Liver Birds’ book in his kitchen in front of his bright paintings, including a rooster! Can you spot it? Also, say hello to the Yes Bird which you will be bringing to life later.

Before you watch the rest of the videos, you may like to search for some toy birds around your home so they can join in, too!

Look and Listen with the Liverpool Liver Birds

Listen and look as Ali reads his poetic picture book and shares his drawings all about the Liver Birds and Liverpool. You could pause the video and discuss what you can see in the illustrations.

You could discuss:

What is your favourite bird and why?

What makes the place where you live special?

How do you work together to help each other?

Crafting a Yes Bird

Make your own Yes Bird by cutting out different shapes and sticking them together. You will make eyes with circles, a beak with triangles and wings and a tail with rectangles and shapes with even more sides!

You could discuss:

What is your favourite bird and why?

What makes the place where you live special?

How do you work together to help each other?

Yes Bird Song

Listen to Ali sing his song about the ‘Yes Bird’ flapping its wings to fly and play amongst the clouds and sun, before returning to the ground. You can join in if you like and why not make some actions to go with the words?

Why not print out the words and sing them along to a ‘Twinkle Twinkle, Little Star’ backing track?

Yes Bird Adventure

Can you take your ‘Yes Bird’ or another of your toy friends on an adventure? Show them where you live and play. When you come back, you could ask the following questions to your toy friend!

Where have you flown? What have you seen? What have you heard? How do you feel? Where would you like to fly next?

This could be an opportunity for your child to enjoy imaginative play and for you to play along, too!

Extension

Ali will soon be publishing a colouring book version of his Liverpool Liver Birds poetic picture book. In the meantime, why not have a go at colouring these different Liver Birds yourself?

The colouring pages are for a range of abilities. Perhaps you could draw in backgrounds or create your own fantastic bird.
