The Space Around Me
EYFSHome's Sarah Griffiths introduces the day. An extra specially packed day of activities today. Don't feel that you have to do everything and as ever you can do the activities at whatever time you want to!
Sarah and Eva start by showing us a hand washing demonstration and how we can put space between us and germs.

Poem – What is space?
Sarah reads a short poem with one of her story characters ‘Jack’ from ‘Jack and the Genie’. He wants to find out about what the word space means.
Grown Ups:
This is a poem written to help children understand the different meanings of the word space. During this time children will hear the words, ‘stay in your own space.’ ‘Keep 2 metres space between each other.’ Then there is the space that is beyond Earth….
The poem helps children to understand from their perspective what it means. This activity teaches children new vocabulary about space and helps them to understand the different meanings.
What is 2 metres?
Sarah explains using crayons and books what 2 metres looks like with her daughter Eva.

Making big bubbles
You can make small bubbles inside too if you can’t get outside yet! If and when you can get outside somewhere we hope this may add to the fun on your exercise walk, in a garden or in the park.
Grown Ups:
Today we are learning all about keeping a safe space to keep ourselves and others safe. Sarah and Eva combine the two, making space using soap solution – to make HUGE bubbles. Sarah explains that bubbles are made up of liquid film and then the air which is the space in the middle. A thin layer of water lies between the two layers of soap molecules, a bit like a water sandwich with soap molecules for bread. They work together to hold the air inside. They are always round because – when they leave the wand, the tension in the bubble skin shrinks to the smallest possible shape for the volume of air it contains. The bubble will shrink into a sphere shape, a sphere has the smallest surface area for the amount of volume.
Children learn about creating space with bubbles and a little bit about the science behind them.
Make your own space rocket
Sarah shares how we can make our own play space rocket to celebrate Elon Musks’ mission to the space station.
Grown Ups:
Sarah shares from this morning’s learning how many metres to the space station. This gives children a good idea of how far away the space station is. Sarah demonstrates how to make your own space rocket and imagine yourself travelling in outer space to the space station.
Children learn about the recent American mission to the Space Station and how far away it is from planet Earth.

Extension
Make your rocket launch!
Sarah demonstrates how to launch your rocket in the air.
Put on your sun glasses (for safety)
Turn the rocket upside down and carefully fill a plastic container with water. Work quickly on the next steps.
Drop in one half of an effervescing tablet.
Snap the lid on tight
Stand the rocket on a flat surface
Move back and watch the launch.
