Allotment Day
Have you ever been to an allotment? Perhaps you help to look after one? Do you grow fruit and vegetables in your own garden? Today we will be celebrating allotments and all of the amazing and healthy produce we can grow in them. Hello and welcome to our special Allotment Day. My name is Gemma Everson and I am a children’s author, mum and teacher who loves gardening! We have so many fun activities planned for you today so join me soon for activity number one!

Exploring my Garden
Welcome to my mini allotment right here in my garden. Anyone can grow vegetables, you don’t even need to have a back garden to do it! Some fruits and vegetables prefer to be indoors and some need very little space. Let’s take a look around my garden and what is growing...

Fruit or Vegetable?
Now we have gathered some fresh produce, let’s see if we can sort them into fruits and vegetables. Try this at home with whatever fresh foods you have or you could even use play food.
Grown Ups:
Grown Ups: This activity will help your child to understand more about the world around them and how new plants grow from the seeds they can see. It will also help your child to sort and classify into groups.You may want to extend this activity further by sorting the vegetables into roots, stems, leaves and flowers.
1:30pm Activity:
Vegetable Printing
For this activity we are going to use some of our fresh vegetables to print a repeating pattern using paint. Make potato printers by cutting a shape into the surface. Make sure you ask a grown up to help you with any cutting or slicing. Also, experiment with other vegetables to see what shapes they make.
Grown Ups:
Grown Ups: This activity will not only help your child to develop creatively but it will also help them to develop mathematically as they explore shapes, colours and patterns.
2:30pm Activity:
Plant Your Own Seed
Now that we have explored where seeds come from, we are going to plant our own seeds and look at what they need to grow into healthy and strong plants.
Grown Ups:
Grown Ups: This activity allows your child to develop their understanding of lifecycles of plants and observe changes over time. You can grow any seeds you like, some are more suitable than others and can be planted at different times of the year. Experiment and have fun!
