Chinese New Year

Happy Chinese New Year from everyone at EYFSHome! My name is Emma and I am a teacher and an artist. Today we will be looking at ‘The Year of the Ox’ for Chinese New Year. There will be lots of fun activities and learning all about Chinese New Year.

9.30am Activity:
The Chinese New Year Story

In our first video we will be reading the story of the Chinese New Year and learning how the twelve animals were chosen by the Emperor.

Grown Ups:

Talk with your child about the story. Can you remember all twelve animals? This activity supports children’s understanding of customs which are celebrated around the world and in parts of the UK.

10.30am Activity:
Make an Ox Mask

It is the year of the Ox, but what year were you born in? I was born in the year of the rat. Let’s have a look at some animals and see the years that they were celebrated for the Chinese New Year.

Grown Ups:

Let’s make an Ox mask to celebrate. Have fun together talking about the story and what you have learnt. This activity supports children’s understanding of customs which are celebrated around the world and in parts of the UK..

1:30pm Activity:
Make a Chinese Lantern

In this activity we will be making a Chinese New Year lantern.

Grown Ups:

You will need some red card, paper, glue, glitter, a pair of scissors and something to make a hole with. You will need some pipe cleaners too. If you have some different yellow or gold materials like tissue paper or ribbon, you could add them too. Let’s get crafting! This activity supports children’s fine motor skills and creativity.

2:30pm Activity:
Fortune Cookies

For our last activity today we will be making fortune cookies.

Grown Ups:

A fortune cookie is a crisp cookie usually made from flour, sugar, vanilla, and oil with a short message or "fortune" inside.

But we are going to make paper cookies ready for our Chinese New Year festivities. This activity develops children’s creativity and knowledge and understanding of the world.

If you've finished these and still have time for fun...

Listen to and have a go at learning a Chinese animal song
