Music Monday
Hello children I'm Jude, an author and storyteller. Here are my storytelling mascots Lamby and Flossie. Today is Music Monday and we are so excited. We LOVE music. We're going to learn a Call and Response song, play some instruments, draw to music and make up a new Nursery Rhyme.
9.30am Activity:
Boom Chicka Boom!
We're going to sing a Call and Response Song. This is when one person sings and the other person sings the line back to them
Grown Ups:
Encourage your child to listen to the words and then repeat them back. You might want to practice a few times.
Use language such as - the lyrics, call, response, repeat, quietly, quickly, loudly, softly etc
Develops - Communication and Language Skills
Try
1. Joining in with the song with help. 2. Join in with the song and suggest how to sing it next with a bit of support. 3. Join in with the song and suggest alternative ways to sing it independently.
10.30am Activity:
Make Music When it Stops
Can you find some musical instruments? Great, let's play a little game. You can play this with your friends, family or toys.
Grown Ups:
Encourage your child to join in with the game, passing the instruments and exploring the sounds they make when the song finishes. This also helps children to hear the difference between the sounds the instruments make which is an important phonic skill.
Use language such as - instrument names, pass, play, sounds, take turns, choose, sing.
Develops - Communication and Language, Expressive Arts and Physical skills.
Try -
1. Joining in with song, passing the instruments and playing them with help. 2. Join in with the song, pass the instruments, play them and attempt to name them.
3. Play the game independently naming the instruments and suggesting others they could use.
1:30pm Activity:
Listen to the Music
We're going to listen to some music and let it tell us what to draw or write on the paper.
Grown Ups:
Put on some music and encourage your child to listen to it then respond by making marks, drawing or writing on some paper. Discuss what they have created at the end.
Use vocabulary such as - draw, write, mark make, pens, crayons, music, listen, imagine.
Develops - Expressive Art and Design, Communication and Language skills.
Try -
1. Encourage your child to listen to the music and respond with marks on the paper.
2. Encourage your child to listen to the music and respond with drawing. Can your child tell you what they have drawn? 3. Encourage your child to draw, write or respond to the music. Can they explain what they have created on paper? Is it a story they can tell you about?
2:30pm Activity:
New Twinkle Twinkle
We are going to make up a new Nursery Rhyme about Lamby and Flossie. Have you got a favourite Nursery Rhyme you could change so it's about you, your friends, family or toys?
Grown Ups:
Discuss your child's favourite Nursery Rhyme and how you can change the words to make it about them and their ideas. Use language such as - rhyme, change, toy names, their names, sounds the same, activity names.
Develops - Communication & Language, and Expressive Art skills.
Try - 1. Encourage them to suggest some ideas for the new nursery rhyme. Can they choose who it will be about? 2. Encourage them to suggest ideas and some rhyming words for the new nursery rhyme. 3. Let them make up their own rhyme independently. Help with rhymes if required.
If you've finished these and still have time for fun...
1. Put on some music and have a Living Room Disco.
2. Tell your friends or grown ups why you like music.
3. Get your musical instruments out and explore making sounds and moving with them.
4. Sing songs.
