Nocturnal Animal Day

Take a peak into the night time with animals that prefer the dark. I used to work as a zoo keeper and learnt lots of information about big animals, when I left the zoo I worked for the RSPCA. I helped sick and injured animals to get better and then could release them back to their owners or back to the wild. AnimalTastic has been going now for 9 years and I love my job. I visit schools, nurseries and care homes teaching people about animals. Today I am going to help you learn a lot about two animals that move in different ways. We will then try to see if we can move like them and we are going to make those animals with an art project.

9.30am Activity:
Niko the Hedgehog

Hello and good morning boys and girls, I hope you are ready to find out about nocturnal animals today. These are animals that are awake during the night and sleep during the day. We are going to find out all about Niko the hedgehog. He is very different to our British hedgehogs and he is white.

Grown Ups:

Children will learn all about hedgehogs and why they have a body of weapons. They will learn about how they feel and their habitat. This supports children's understanding of the world.

10.30am Activity:
Create Your Own Hedgehog

For this activity I have a little helper, Alice. Alice will be working with me to create two pieces of art work for her wall at home. For this you will need some coloured card or paper. Some scissors (grown -up help), glue, felts or paint.

Grown Ups:

This activity will help children to make decisions using colours. Help your little person with the cutting and gluing parts. Try using multi-coloured card for a different coloured hedgehog. Make the hedgehog as big or as small as you like and maybe add a mummy hog and her babies.

This is a great way for your child to express themselves with colour and using art to do so.

1:30pm Activity:
Fizz the Rat

In this session we are going to learn all about another nocturnal animal.

This is all about an animal called Fizz, He’s a rat.

Grown Ups:

Children will learn about nocturnal animals. Learning all about a rat and what part of a rats body is good for smell, balance, hearing.

This will help the children understand which animals are suited to a particular time of day or night. This helps with their knowledge and understanding of the world.

2:30pm Activity:
Animal Hide and Seek

In this activity we are going to make our own hide and seek game for nocturnal animals. For this activity you will need a plastic pocket, some black paper, some white paper, glue and a marker pen in black.

I hope you all enjoyed your day and I hope to see you all again soon.

Grown Ups:

Help your child / children with deciding which animals to draw on the plastic pocket. Maybe when you have done this you could play hide and seek for real around the house or garden.

If you've finished these and still have time for fun...

If you have time, take a look at this website and find out about the hedgehog hospital and the work the staff do to help the hedgehogs get better and re-released into the wild.
