Yellow Day

My name is Emma, I am a teacher and an artist. Today I will be doing some fun activities all about the colour yellow. Almost everywhere in the world yellow represents sunshine, happiness, and warmth.

In nature, yellow is the colour of sunflowers and daffodils, egg yolks and lemons, canaries and bees.

I hope you enjoy all of the activities today.

9.30am Activity:
Food Tasting

In our first activity let’s have a look at different yellow food. I wonder what they taste like?

Do you have a favourite?

I love bananas, they are lovely and sweet. Some foods are sweet, some are salty, some are bitter and some are sour.

Grown Ups:

Together with your child try some yellow foods. You could try a variety of tastes and some that your child hasn’t tried before.

Have a go at thinking about whether they are sweet, bitter, salty or sour. This activity supports children’s knowledge and understanding of different foods and tastes.

10.30am Activity:
Yellow Plants

At this time of year we see beautiful daffodils everywhere. Like all plants and flowers the warm, golden sun makes the daffodils grow.

Grown Ups:

Follow along with your child as I show you how to make a curly daffodil craft that you can do together.
You might like to paint a background for your daffodil too. This activity develops children’s creativity and knowledge of plants.

1:30pm Activity:
Yellow Animal Art

There are lots of different animals that are yellow. Can you think of some?

For this activity I’ve decided to choose the giraffe, with his long neck reaching high for the leaves at the top of the trees.

Grown Ups:

Have a go at making some different yellow animal art. I have put some ideas on the website for you. This activity develops children’s creativity and understanding of animals linked with the colour yellow.

2:30pm Activity:
Yellow House Hunt

For our final activity today, I’m going to show you all the things I found around my house that are yellow.

Grown Ups:

I found yellow items around the house and I use them for different things. Can you find all the yellow items on the video? Go on a house hunt together with your child and find all the yellow things you can. You can have a go at drawing around some of them and colouring them in. This activity develops children’s learning through exploration and supports their communication and language.

If you've finished these and still have time for fun...

Why not have a go at making some funny yellow emojis, you can cut and stick silly faces and costumes onto them.

You can also read this poem all about the colour yellow.
